Rutgers University has a long history of collaboration and joint research with many African institutions. Expanding on this, the Rutgers Institute for Science and Technology Leadership in Africa (RISTLA) aims to foster higher education for scientific research and development, and to grow the infrastructure to educate a highly trained technical African workforce.

Over the long-term, RISTLA will help to overcome the lack of a critical mass of African scientists and engineers that limits the industrial and agricultural productive capacity in many African countries. RISTLA focuses on building workforce capacity to meet the enormous demand for new technologies in Africa, including: energy and sustainability; infrastructure and transportation; water and natural resources; and health and life sciences.
